The Emsland district, formed on August 1, 1977 from the districts of Aschendorf-Hümmling, Meppen and Lingen, extends over 2,880 km² from the North Rhine-Westphalia state border near Rheine to the border of East Frisia near Papenburg. This makes it the largest district in Lower Saxony in terms of area, is one of the largest in the Federal Republic of Germany and is larger overall than the federal state of Saarland.
